This Morning's Nature Walk Searching for a Heart

This morning I asked my five year old if he'd like to go outside and look with me for a heart.  After he excitedly said, "Yes!" we set out on a walk looking for a heart for Guest Heart Thursday.

We saw a lot of interesting things along the way.  We had some light rain this morning, and a slug was out enjoying the moisture on the grass. This little fellow was hiding.

When my son goes outside he often peeks beneath a large, fabric frisbee we have lying on the ground near the garage.  We call it "the bug home."  Today he saw some pill bugs (roly polies) beneath it.  He loves to pick them up and let them crawl on him.  He says they tickle!  This one was curled up at first, but then he opened up!

Then my son stopped by the slide, but it was a little too wet.

While he was on the slide I saw a heart on the ground made from moss that probably blew off our garage roof in the wind recently. I'm afraid it's not very pretty and a bit bedraggled so I'm a little embarrassed to show it.  My son saw the heart in it, though!

Then he said he found the bottom of a heart.  I went over and took a look, and he showed me a rock.  I pointed out the piece of roof (I admit we need a new roof!) lying on top of it and said that I thought that with that lying there it looked like a heart. He brightened up at that thought and agreed!

We found a cool stick. My son said it looked like a "y"!

Before continuing on our way we stopped and smelled the roses.

After examining some three-leaf clovers growing in our driveway, he said that he found a part of a heart.  I took a look, and again I told him I thought I could see a whole heart!  I don't know, maybe I'm being too hopeful, but the two top leaves look like the top of a heart to me, and the bottom leaf looks like the bottom of a heart.  My son agreed!  Yayh!  He found two hearts!

Shortly after, he started picking some blackberries and collected a big handful.

While editing this picture of my son hold his blackberries, my nine year old came up behind me and commented, "That looks like a heart!" So there may be a heart to be found in these berries, too!

While walking along, my son glanced down at the ground and found a hazelnut! We didn't realize we had (what I think?) is an American hazelnut tree in our yard!  I picked up the nut and looked at it.  Hmmmm, I thought, could this be a heart?  I asked my son if he thought it looked a little bit like a heart.  I handed it to him.  He said he thought it looked a little bit like a heart, and a little bit like cabbage.  He paused and then explained that he thought it looked more like cabbage than like a heart.

And then we walked the rest of the way up the hill and into our house, and thus ended our walk!

Thank you, Clytie!  Your love of hearts inspired this walk!  Without you we never would have had this lovely adventure this morning.  :D  ♥
