Sequalitchew Beach and Something Special We Saw (our trip con't, part 3)

We had been walking, on and off, with stops along the way, for about an 1 hour and 25 minutes.  After parking our minivan in the DuPont Civic Center parking lot and walkng down the Sequalitchew Creek Trail to the beach, we walked south on the beach until we reached the sand jetty. According to Fred404 in the description of his youtube.com video, Foss Launch and Tug created the jetty years ago to stage and store log rafts. At the end of the jetty sat the object of our destination -- an old shipwrecked cement and iron ship.

The day we went the tide got down to -2.5. Fred404 says in his directions for hiking out to the cement boat at Nisqually Reach that you can reach the boat when the tide is below minus .5, so if you decide to go out there, check the tides and give yourself plenty of time to reach the boat before the tide starts to come in again.

walking on the jetty

Though it took us about 1 hour and 25 minutes to get out to the sand jetty, we walked the jetty itself very quickly not only because it was easy to walk, but especially because, with the zoom on his camera, my son had spotted something out in the water beyond the ship, and he couldn't quite tell what it was.  We went quickly so that we could find out what it was and in case it was something cool!  Could it be a seal, or was it just a stick, a large rock, a dog? . . .

It was a stellar sea lion and her pup!!

  1. What a sharp eye, and what a great find! These things don't happen every day, and are so special when they do. Your children will remember this forever.
